Cider Chat Podcaster Ria Windcaller interviews Michael Phillips's good friend, orchardist Alan Surprenant, about who Michael was as a person, as a friend and as a fellow orchardist. Their conversation also goes deep into what's involved in growing apples holistically, both for the commercial grower and the home orchardist.

Hemlock Grove Farm

West Danby, New York

Brian Caldwell writes: “Managing our understory for lots of flowering broadleaf 'weeds' such as mints, Queen Anne's lace, clovers, etc. seems to help quite a bit with insect pests. We do this by waiting until late May for the first orchard mowing, which is done with a sickle bar mower. This practice encourages regrowth of broadleafs.”

The Network becomes all the more engaging as orchardists get to know each other better. Posting a grower profile allows other growers to learn about your farm, your trees, your philosophy. >
